Private Equity Analyst is a newsletter that since 1988 has provided news and information about the private-equity market and its investment specialities, including venture capital, leveraged buyouts, mezzanine investing and turnarounds.

Based in Wellesley, Massachusetts, it also conducts the Private Equity Analyst range of eight annual conferences of the private-capital industry.

On Feb. 19, 2004 Dow Jones & Company announced that it had signed an agreement to acquire the stock and assets of the Alternative Investor Group, the publisher of Private Equity Analyst.

Subscriptions cost $1,495 a year within the U.S., and a single issue costs $150.

The Eastern and Southern Nilotic languages were formerly widely believed to constitute a single Paranilotic (or, earlier, “Nilo-Hamitic”) grouping; they were believed to have arisen as a sort of “mixed language” combining Nilotic (modern Western Nilotic) and “Hamitic” (in particular, modern Cushitic) elements. Freely redistributable software (FRS) is software that anyone is free to redistribute. The term has been used to mean two types of free to redistribute software, distinguished by the legal modifiability of the software. FRS which can be legally modified is the same as free software. Non-legally modifiable FRS is freeware, shareware or similar.

The non-modifiable FRS generally comes in the form of executable binaries and is often used by proprietary software companies and authors to showcase their work or to encourage the user to buy full products from them (in the case of shareware, demo or trial versions). The Kodansha Kanji Learner’s Dictionary is a kanji dictionary based on the New Japanese-English Character Dictionary by Jack Halpern (linguist) and published by Kenkyūsha. The dictionary arranges entries according to an original system called SKIP (System of Kanji Indexing by Patterns), although the dictionary does contain a radical index.

SKIP

The SKIP method used by the Kodansha Learner’s Dictionary is an original system for indexing kanji, meant to be accessible to those who have no prior knowledge of kanji. Instead of organizing kanji based on radicals, they are organized based on pattern. Based on how a kanji can be divided into sections, they are grouped into four main categories: Left-Right (1), Up-Down (2), Enclosure (3), and Solid (4). Users then count the number of strokes in each segment, and then use this to determine the kanji’s SKIP number.

Determining SKIP numbers

1) Left-Right

Left-Right kanji are those which can be broken down into sections segmented vertically such as 明 (bright), which can be broken down into the left segment 日 (sun) and the right segment 月 (moon). Thus, 明 would be in the first main category (Left-Right), would have four strokes in its left segment and four in its right, giving it a SKIP number 1-4-4.

In the above example, the kanji can be broken down into two segments, both of which are actual radicals, but such does not need to be the case. The kanji 潮 (tide) can broken down into three segments 氵(water), 車 (wheel), and 月. In such cases, the leftmost discrete element is treated as the left segment, and the rest of the kanji as the right segment. Therefore, 潮 is split into the left segment of 氵and the right segment of 車 and 月, and the resulting SKIP number is 1-3-12.

2) Up-Down

Up-Down kanji are kanji that can be broken down into sections segmented horizontally such as 男 (male), which can be broken down into the up segment 田 (rice field) and the down segment 力 (power). Thus, 男 would be in the second main category (Up-Down), would have five strokes in its up section and two strokes in its down section, giving it a SKIP number of 2-5-2.

Again, the up and down sections do not necessarily need to be radicals, and can consist of more than two segments. The kanji 薬 (medicine) can be split into three segments. In such cases, the topmost discrete element is the up segment, while the remainder of the kanji is the down segment. Thus, 薬 has a SKIP number of 2-3-13.

3) Enclosure

Enclosure kanji are kanji where an element of the kanji borders or surrounds other elements of the kanji. Such elements can border other elements on two sides (近 and 症), three sides (風 and 区), or completely surround the other elements (囲). In SKIP numbers for enclosure kanji, the bordering element’s stroke count comes first, followed by the stroke count of the elements inside the enclosure. Thus, the SKIP number of 風 (wind) is 3-2-7.

4) Solid

Solid kanji are kanji that cannot be easily broken down into elements based on the patterns of the other categories. Often these kanji are formed from a single radical. Solid kanji are broken down into four sub-patterns:

1. Top line - Kanji which have a prominent horizontal stroke at the top, ie. 耳 (ear) and 子 (child).
2. Bottom line - Kanji which have a prominent horizontal stroke at the bottom, ie. 上 (up) and 丘 (hill).
3. Through line - Kanji which have a prominent vertical stroke through the middle, ie. 本 (book) and 中 (middle).
4. Others - Kanji which cannot be placed in the preceding sub-patterns, ie. 女 (woman) and 丸 (circle).

SKIP numbers for Solid kanji follow this pattern: 4 (the main category) - (the stroke count for the entire kanji) - (the number of the sub-pattern). Thus, the SKIP number of 子 is 4-3-1 and the SKIP number for 本 is 4-5-3.

Aids in searching

In its index for kanji, pages where a user might erroneously expect a kanji to be located (either because of incorrect classification or incorrect stroke count) are cross-referenced with their correct SKIP number.

Mancopter is a computer game by the company Datasoft that appeared on the Commodore 64 computer system in the mid-1980s. The player controls a person piloting a helicopter-like flying device over an ocean, and apparently competing with other computer-controlled pilots. Although at first glance it looks like a racing game, there is actually no finish line and the goal of the game is not to pass other players but to gain a high score, which is accomplished by flying the farthest before time runs out.

The player flies the copter by rapidly pressing the fire button on the joystick. If the player stops pressing the button, or runs into some sort of obstacle, then the copter will fall into the sea. For a few of these falls, the player is saved by a whale who surfaces with the copter on its head and allows the player to continue the game. If the player runs out of “Fish,” (which can be stolen or recaptured from flying pelicans,) then a “Jaws”-inspired shark eats the player instead and the game is over.

Mancopter was programmed by Scott Spanburg, and the distinctive music was composed by John A. Fitzpatrick.

Canadian Business is the longest-publishing business magazine in Canada. It was founded in 1928 as The Commerce of the Nation, the organ of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Leadenhall Market is a covered market in the City of London, located in Gracechurch Street.

The market dates back to the fourteenth century. It is open from 07:00-16:00 Monday to Friday, and sells fresh food; among the vendors there are cheesemongers, butchers and fishmongers.

The ornate roof structure, painted green, maroon and cream, and cobbled floors of the current building, designed in 1881 by Sir Horace Jones (who was also the architect of Billingsgate and Smithfield Markets), make the building a tourist attraction. It was used to represent the area of London near The Leaky Cauldron and Diagon Alley in the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It is also popular among local city workers specifically from the nearby Lloyd’s of London building.

The Telmac 1800 was an early microcomputer delivered in kit form. It was introduced in 1977 by Telercas, the Finnish importer of RCA microchips. Most of the 2,000 kits manufactured were bought by electronics enthusiasts in Finland and Sweden.

In phonology, absolute neutralisation is a phenomenon in which a segment of the underlying representation of a morpheme is not realized in any of its phonetic representation. For example, Chomsky & Halle (1968) assume that the underlying representation of the word ellipse contains a final segment /e/ even though this segment is never pronounced. But the assumption of this segment in underlying representation explains the exceptional stress pattern of the word, i.e. that of trisyllabic words instead of that of bisyllabic words, i.e. /ellípse/ instead of /éllipse/. The segment /e/ is deleted after the assignment of stress: thus the opposition between /e/ and zero (the absence of a segment) is neutralized (see also: contextual neutralization).

Independent Software Vendor (ISV) is a business term for companies specialising in making or selling standardised software, usually for niche markets, such as that for real estate brokers, scheduling for healthcare personnel, barcode scanning and stock maintenance.

Specialised products generally offer higher productivity to organisations than more generalised software such as basic spreadsheet or database packages.

Most large software companies, including Microsoft and IBM, have special programs for ISVs.

An ISV makes and sells software products that run on one or more computer hardware or operating system platforms. The companies that make the platforms, such as BEA Systems, Microsoft, IBM, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, and Apple, encourage and lend support to ISVs, often with special “business partner” programs.

In general, the more applications that run on a platform, the more value it offers to customers. Of course, platform manufacturers such as Microsoft and IBM make applications as well, but don’t have the resources and, in many cases, the special knowledge required, to make them all.

Some ISVs focus on a particular operating system, such as IBM’s small business AS/400, for which there are thousands of ISV applications. Other ISVs specialise in a particular application area, such as engineering, and develop software primarily for high-end Unix-based workstation platforms.

ISVs make and sell software that is added to platforms. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) use hardware platform components to build larger products. Value-added resellers (VARs) incorporate platform software into their own software product packages.

Prior to the appointment to the Court, he was an attorney for the Legislation and Regulations Division of the Internal Revenue Service, Tax Counsel for the United States Senate Committee on Finance, and Deputy Tax Legislative Counsel in the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Tax Policy. He was appointed by President Bill Clinton as Judge, United States Tax Court, on April 9, 1995, for a term ending April 8, 2010. Foley was the first African-American appointed to the United States Tax Court. Foley is also an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado School of Law.

A lagging indicator is an economic indicator that reacts slowly to economic changes, and therefore has little predictive value. Generally these types of indicators follow an event; they are historical in nature. For example, in a performance measuring system, profit earned by a business is a lagging indicator as it reflects a historical performance; similarly improved customer satisfaction is the result of initiatives taken in the past.
Lagging indicators demonstrate how well an economy has performed in the past few months, giving economists a chance to review their predictions and make better forecasts.

The T1 General or T1 (entitled Income Tax and Benefit Return) is the form used in Canada by individuals to file their personal income tax return. Individuals with tax payable during a calendar year must use the T1 to file their total income from all sources, including employment and self-employment income, interest, dividends, and capital gains, rental income, and so on. Foreign income must also be declared and included in the total income. After applicable deductions and adjustments, the net income and taxable income are determined, from which the federal tax and the provincial or territorial tax are calculated to give the total payable. Subtracting total credits, which include the tax withheld, the filer will either receive a refund or have balance owing, which may be zero.

The T1 and any balance owing for each year are generally due by the end of April of the following year.

Yarragon is a railway station on the Bairnsdale railway line in Victoria, Australia. It is 112km from Southern Cross station. The station is located adjacent to the Princes Highway on the northern side.

A disused goods platform exists behind the DOWN platform. Steam locomotive K162 is on display opposite the UP platform entrance. This locomotive was exchanged for K183 of the same class, when Steamrail Victoria deemed 183 to be in better condition. K183’s tender remained, and thus K162 was painted as K183. K183 has since been involved in a tragic crash with a truck.

Envolution is a content management system that began as a fork of PostNuke.

Creation

Envolution created and developed a smarty based templating engine named “Encompass”. Emcompass was later combined with “envRender”, another Envolution-developed work.

Envolution Software

The Envolution Project formally disbanded as a community project in 2003. Afterwards, the group became the Envolution Software business entity. Envolution Software serves as a holding company for various other projects and products.

Highway 180 is a short highway located in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Its original location was along Assembly Road and Skyline Drive where it circled around Mount Sequoyah and returned to its single terminus of Highway 45. This segment was decommissioned in the early 1990s.

A second segment began at U.S. Route 71 Business in Fayetteville and followed Township Road, Gregg Ave and Drake Street before ending at Highway 112. In the 1990s this segment was extended north along Gregg Ave and now ends at a spur of U.S. 71 Business on the north end of Fayetteville.

A third segment runs 2 miles along 6th Street. Its western terminus is at an intersection with Interstate 540, U.S. 62 and U.S. 71 in western Fayetteville where it continues west as U.S. 62 towards Oklahoma. Its eastern terminus is at an intersection with U.S. 71 Business (aka South School Ave), where it continues east as 6th Street. Between 1971 and 1999 this road was designated Business US 62

The 145 Squadron of the Republic of Singapore Air Force currently operates the F-16 Fighting Falcon from the Changi Airbase (East), a new airbase built to the east of Singapore Changi Airport on reclaimed land. The 16 aircraft are upgraded versions of the F-16D Block 52, hence known as the Block 52+, and are tasked with air-to-ground operations.

With the hornet as its motif, the squadron’s motto is “Swift & Valiant” Formed in 1984, it flew the A-4 Skyhawk, locally known as the A-4SU Super Skyhawk, along with her sister squadron, the 142 Squadron, from Tengah Airbase. When the A-4SU was removed from active combat service, however, the 142 Squadron was disbanded, while the 145 Squadron was retained to operate the newly-upgraded F-16s from the new air base, an unsurprising decision considering the fact that the 145 Squadron has emerged as the best fighter squadron for five consecutive years since the year 2000 in the annual Singapore Armed Forces Best Unit Competition.

The National Business Review (or NBR) is a weekly New Zealand newspaper aimed at the business sector. The paper is owned by Barry Colman who also publishes the Grocers Review and several other small trade publications.

The National Business Reviews major competitors are the daily newspapers in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and the much smaller Independent.

“Twenty Four Hours” is a song by English indie rock band Athlete and is the tenth track on their 2005 album Tourist. The song was later released as part of a double A-side single in November 2005 with non-album track “Stand in the Sun“. The single was the fourth and final taken from Tourist, peaking at #42 in the UK Singles Chart (see 2005 in British music).

Remote Data Objects (abbreviated RDO) is the name of an obsolete data access application programming interface primarily used in Microsoft Visual Basic applications on Windows 95 and later operating systems. This includes database connection, queries, stored procedures, result manipulation, and change commits. It allowed developers to create interfaces that can directly interact with Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) data sources on remote machines, without having to deal with the comparatively complex ODBC API.

Remote Data Objects was included with versions 4, 5, and 6 of Visual Basic; the final version of RDO is version 2.0.

Independent Software Vendor (ISV) is a business term for companies specialising in making or selling standardised software, usually for niche markets, such as that for real estate brokers, scheduling for healthcare personnel, barcode scanning and stock maintenance.

Specialised products generally offer higher productivity to organisations than more generalised software such as basic spreadsheet or database packages.

Most large software companies, including Microsoft and IBM, have special programs for ISVs.

An ISV makes and sells software products that run on one or more computer hardware or operating system platforms. The companies that make the platforms, such as BEA Systems, Microsoft, IBM, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, and Apple, encourage and lend support to ISVs, often with special “business partner” programs.

In general, the more applications that run on a platform, the more value it offers to customers. Of course, platform manufacturers such as Microsoft and IBM make applications as well, but don’t have the resources and, in many cases, the special knowledge required, to make them all.

Some ISVs focus on a particular operating system, such as IBM’s small business AS/400, for which there are thousands of ISV applications. Other ISVs specialise in a particular application area, such as engineering, and develop software primarily for high-end Unix-based workstation platforms.

ISVs make and sell software that is added to platforms. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) use hardware platform components to build larger products. Value-added resellers (VARs) incorporate platform software into their own software product packages.

Kutha (modern Tell Ibrahim) was an ancient city of Sumer on the right bank of the eastern branch of the Upper Euphrates, north of Nippur. It was the cult city of Nergal.

Kutha is also the name of the capital of the Sumerian underworld, Irkalla.

Occultism

The author of a modern occult book called the Simon Necronomicon claimed that the name Cthulhu used in the works of H.P. Lovecraft is based upon this name. It was argued that Cthulhu was actually Kuthalu, which was reported as meaning “Man of Kutha” or “Man of the underworld” and thus a god of the dead, or more specifically Nergal. This was offered as part of many claims that Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos fiction was based upon Sumerian mythology.

There is actually no evidence to support this claim, and Chris Siren, author of the Sumerian Mythology FAQ, states that “Lu” meaning “man” was only used as a prefix and not a suffix (so the name, had it actually existed, would have been Lukutha and not Kuthalu) and specifically referred only to mortal men and not gods.

Obsession is an album by Eighteen Visions. It features much more commercial songs and melodies. The album was their most commercial to date, and featured three music videos. Some editions of this album come with a DVD that features a ‘making of’ the album.The album has sold 200,000+ copies in the U.S.The album peaked at #4 on the top Heatseekers chart in the U.S.

Ranji H. Nagaswami is the Chief Investment Officer for AllianceBernstein Fund Investors. She has held this position since 2004. Nagaswami has responsibility for growth, value, and core stock as well as fixed income investments. She chairs the retail investors investment policy group and has been the senior portfolio manager for the US Value Equities fund since 2001. Before joining AllianceBernstein in 1999, Nagaswami was with UBS Brinson where she held various positions including co-head of US Fixed Income, managing director, and quantitative analyst. She has frequently spoken on asset allocation, risk management, and portfolio management issues.

Nagaswami earned an M.B.A. from Yale School of Management and a degree from Bombay University. She also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

The Digges Amendment was an amendment to the Maryland Constitution proposed in 1910 by the Democratic Party. The amendment would have used property requirements to effectively disenfranchise many African Americans (and possibly some immigrants) in the state.

The amendment was passed by the Maryland General Assembly (and approved by Governor Austin Lane Crothers), but it still required the approval of the people. Even before the people had a chance to vote on the amendment, a bill was proposed which would have effectively passed the requirements of the Digges Amendment into law anyway. Not only did that measure fail (after a public outcry) but the amendment itself was rejected by the people of Maryland. Similar proposals would arise in Maryland over the next several years.
